The Elastoplast Healing Capsule Technology – also known as hydrocolloid technology – contains macromolecules which are able to absorb liquids like water or wound fluid, they swell and form a gel. In Second Skin Protection these hydrocolloid particles are dispersed in an adhesive mass which gives elasticity and stickiness to the plaster.

The composition of hydrocolloid dressings contributes to their remarkable properties. Elastoplast Second Skin Protection features two distinct layers. The inner layer contains the hydrocolloid particles and also acts as a wound pad, while the outer layer, crafted from polyurethane, is flexible and 100% waterproof; then covered by a support foil for ease of application.

At the heart of Elastoplast’s hydrocolloid wound dressings and plasters, there is a mechanism that helps accelerate healing with moist wound healing - the healing capsule. When the hydrocolloid particles (sodium carboxymethylcellulose) come into contact with wound fluid (exudate), they absorb the exudate and form a viscous gel which may be visible as a ‘healing capsule’, an opaque bubble that can appear over the wound. This bubble maintains a moist microenvironment, conditions which are optimal for wound healing. In the video you can see how the healing capsule is accelerating the healing process.

Moist wound healing has several benefits over dry wound healing, such as preventing the formation of a crust or a scab, accelerating the natural healing process, and reducing the risk of scarring. Moist wound healing can improve the healing process and the cosmetic outcome for patients.
